Cricket betting terms, explained simply
THE LANGUAGE OF THE SLIP

Cricket betting terms, explained simply

A betting slip is easier to read when you know the words. This glossary covers the terms cricket bettors meet first, grouped so you can find what you need, with examples drawn from the toss and match markets.

  • Markets
  • Odds
  • Money
  • Settlement
HOW THE LIST WORKS

Read the terms in the order you will meet them

A bet moves through a few stages: you pick a market, read the odds, set a stake, wait for the result and see it settled. The groups below follow that order. Where a term depends on the sportsbook's own rules, we say to check them rather than guess.

TERM MAP

Four groups of betting words

Use the map to jump to the group of terms you need, then read down the page in that order.

  • Market words

Toss winner, toss combination and match betting, the three cricket markets the operator names.

  • Price words

Odds, margin and implied chance, which describe what an outcome pays and how likely the book thinks it is.

  • Money words

Stake, return, profit and bankroll, the terms for what you risk and what you can win.

  • Result words

Settlement, void and abandoned, which describe how and when a bet is decided.

BASICS

Starter terms for a first slip

The words you need before placing anything.

What is a bet slip?

The panel that collects your selections, odds and stake before you confirm.

What is a selection?

The outcome you pick within a market, such as one captain to win the toss.

What is a market?

A question the sportsbook offers a price on, such as who wins the toss or the match.

What is a stake?

The amount you risk on a slip. It is the most you can lose on it.

What is a return?

The total paid on a winning bet, including your stake.

What is profit?

The return minus the stake. It is what you gain on a winning bet.

A STEP FURTHER

Terms for readers who want more depth

Words that help you judge a price rather than just read it.

What is a margin?

The built-in advantage in a set of odds. It is why the chances implied by all outcomes add up to more than 100 per cent.

What is implied probability?

The chance of an outcome that the odds suggest. Shorter odds imply a higher chance.

What is a bookmaker market?

A market in which you bet against the sportsbook at its price.

What is a betting exchange?

A peer-to-peer market where players bet against each other, with commission on net winnings.

What is in-play betting?

Betting after a match has started, where prices change quickly.

What is an accumulator?

One slip with several selections, all of which must win.

WORKED EXAMPLES

Small examples in plain units

These use made-up units to show the idea behind each term, not real prices on any market.

  • A toss winner slip

You stake 10 units at odds of 2.0. If your captain wins the toss, the return is 20 units and the profit is 10.

  • A toss combination slip

You stake 10 units at odds of 4.0 on a captain winning and batting first. Both must happen or you lose the 10.

  • A losing run

Five losing stakes of 10 units cost 50 units. One win at odds of 2.0 returns only 10 profit, so patience alone does not recover it.

  • A void bet

If a market is voided under its rules, the stake is normally returned. Check the market's own settlement terms.

When a term depends on the sportsbook's rules
ASK THE OPERATOR

When a term depends on the sportsbook's rules

Settlement details belong to the operator, not to this site, so confirm them with the operator directly.

  • 24/7 customer support

The operator states that a support team is available around the clock.

  • Email

If you cannot reach support, the operator says to write to info@jeetbuzz.com.

  • Read the market rules

Each market has its own rules on ties, abandonment and shortened matches. Read them first.

QUESTIONS ABOUT TERMS

Common questions about betting vocabulary

Quick answers about the words readers mix up most.

What do toss winner and toss combination mean?

Toss winner is a call on the coin flip. Toss combination adds whether the winner bats or bowls first.

Is a higher number in the odds better?

It pays more, but it means the outcome is less likely. Higher is not better, only riskier.

Do all sportsbooks use the same terms?

Many are shared, but the odds format and the settlement rules can differ. Read the ones on the slip.

What does void mean?

A bet cancelled under the market's rules. Normally the stake is returned.

What is a bankroll?

The total money you set aside for betting. It should be money you can afford to lose.

Where can I read more?

The cricket page applies these terms to the toss and match markets.
